Fictional mystery writing developed around 1830s in America. The first group of mystery writers in America is known as 'American Renaissance'. Edgar Allan Poe and Herman Melville are some of the famous authors of this time. Emile Gaboriau became famous for his crime-solving mystery books during the 1850s and 1860s. But Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is perhaps the most famous author of this genre for his famous series of 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes'. The time period of 1920-1945 belonged to one of the greatest mystery writer of all time- Agatha Christie. The works of Stephen King and Mary Higgins Clark are attracting many mystery readers today.
